It’s also a question of financial risk. Whether an over-reaction or not, the reality is there has already been a huge economic impact in New Zealand and internationally.

Companies that have always sponsored ITx will find it harder to source that money, and likewise delegates may find it harder to get their places paid for, or to travel.

ITx has always had some international keynotes and attendees, who may be prevented, or at least deterred, from making firm commit to travel in these uncertain times.

The organisation and planning of this event takes place during the Australasian winter and flu season, and the signs were already emerging that this conference would face significant obstacles in the current climate.

I’m quite sure that ConfereNZ – who are in the business of running conferences – would much prefer that everyone “keep calm and carry on” but as a not-for-profit membership based professional body, IT Professionals can not afford to place the health of its members at risk.

When you also factor in the very real economic risks of attempting to organise such a massive conference, ITP’s financial health would also be very much at risk.

As difficult as it was to postpone what has always been a very successful conference, bringing together up to 12 different organisations and 1,000 delegates, I’m comfortable that the correct decision was made, and for the right reasons.
