‘Localist’ launches, looks to take on Yellow Pages

New Zealand Post has launched a new local information and directory service called Localist, which looks set to compete with business directory veteran, The Yellow Pages…

Localist will consist of five Auckland guides, a website, and a mobile application, with books issued twice yearly, and will offer both free and paid-for listings.

The product is being described as “a cross between a local guide to your area and a business directory”, will also include local news, events, comments and posts.

The brand has already had a run-in with long-term market leader Yellow, which ended in court, with Localist accusing the Yellow Pages Group of cyber-squatting and “brand-jacking” in the run-up to the launch. The case ended with Yellow Pages agreeing to transfer ownership of the contested domains over to Localist.

The books will be in homes and PostShop stores across Auckland, with an estimated 760,000 guides in circulation at any one time.
