Domino’s Pizza is putting in technology that lets its customers see just exactly where lunch is at any given moment…

By putting in a GPS tracking system for its fleet of delivery vehicles, Domino’s said it is looking to increase efficiency and improve safety for drivers, while allowing customers who really don’t have anything better to do to track their pizza delivery in real time, presumably on a smartphone or similar device. Vehicles operating from Domino’s 91 stores nationwide will be equipped with the solution after a pilot program in Australia showed increased revenue and fewer driver accidents.

The technology, provided by Navman Wireless, will be installed in some 750 vehicles including scooters and cars across the country.

Domino’s New Zealand GM Scott Bush says a positive response in test markets meant rolling out the initiative was a ‘no-brainer’. “The device provides visibility and insight into driver behaviour which helps keep our staff safe while also improving efficiency.”

The GPS fleet management system measures real time speed against the posted speed limit, as well as harsh braking or acceleration. In the event that a driver gets into an accident or becomes the victim of a crime, GPS tracking alerts emergency personnel faster.

“[It allows] our managers to track vehicles at all times, determine who is behind the wheel and how safely they’re driving,” said Scott. “Monitoring driver behaviour and providing feedback to drivers to help them improve supports us to meet our obligations as an employer, which is particularly important in the light of the changing health and safety legislation in New Zealand.”

The system is said to increase the efficiency of the delivery process, integrating with the pizza ordering and making system to get completed orders to drivers faster. The GPS system also helps drivers locate the delivery point more easily.

“Previously there was an information ‘black hole’ between the pizza being completed in-store then delivered to the door. Now there is transparency for Domino’s managers and customers across the whole process,” said Ian Daniel, APAC VP at Navman Wireless.

In other words, those worried about the exact geolocation of their next snack can finally put their tortured minds at ease.
