iStart is supporting the annual WriteMark New Zealand Plain English Awards. The awards promote businesses that communicate clearly and raise awareness about the benefits of using plain English. Businesses enter to gain recognition for the way they communicate and to show their commitment to clarity. Entry is free and there are categories to suit any business…

Lynda Harris, speaking on behalf of the WriteMark New Zealand Plain English Awards Trust, answers some questions about why businesses should enter.

How could the Plain English Awards benefit our business?

Winners often say plain English has completely transformed their organisations. Policies and procedures become clearer and there are fewer mistakes and complaints. Plain English increases efficiency and customers benefit through cost savings and by better understanding products and services.

For some businesses the Awards become a marketing opportunity. Customers get the message that dealing with this business will be a good experience. People associate integrity and quality with clarity, so a commitment to plain English can really give a business a competitive edge.

Can anyone enter?

Any New Zealand business that is trying hard to communicate clearly is welcome. Entrants range from large government departments to small private companies and even individuals. Businesses can enter their own documents or be nominated by customers using the ‘People’s choice’ category.

What sort of document gets entered?

Anything that conveys information can be entered. Typical entries include web pages, policy documents, terms of service, brochures and contracts. Some companies enter big plain English projects and others submit a single sentence they have made easier to understand.

There is a new Award category this year for technical writers. This Award is sponsored by the Technical Communicators Association of New Zealand Inc.

What can we win?

The top prize is valued at $10,000 but there are many other prizes. Winners also get a stylish trophy they can display at work.

Who judges the Awards?

International and New Zealand plain English experts judge the Awards, assuring our plain English work is accurately assessed against world standards.

How can I enter?

It’s easy. Go to www.plainenglishawards.org.nz, choose a category, and submit your entry. Entries close 28 June, so be quick!

When are the Awards?

The Awards will be held Friday 3 September at the Banquet Hall at Parliament. They will be hosted by Attorney General Hon Christopher Finlayson. Anyone can attend the Awards evening which is a fun and spectacular event.
